Description

The Dealkalizer is part of the water purification Pre-Treatment (Before Reverse Osmosis). It’s purpose is to remove bicarbonate and carbonate ions from tap water. The Dealkalizer is placed after the softener and before the carbon tanks in the system.

“Dealkalization is the removal of bicarbonate and carbonate ions from water supplies. The most frequently used method is with a strong base anion resin on chloride cycle. The bicarbonate and carbonate ions are exchanged for chlorides from the strong base anion that is regenerated with salt (sodium chloride). This is very similar to the ion exchange process used in water softeners, except here, the chloride ion is used.” From Purolite Company.

When used in a system, a water softener (cation resin exchanging for the sodium ion) precedes the dealkalizer. This is because the water hardness (calcium and magnesium) must be removed prior to the dealkalizer (anion resin) to prevent bed fouling. To get the full benefit of the lower pH produced by the dealkalizer, the unit would be placed upstream of the carbon filters (carbon performs poorly on higher pH waters).

Dealkalizing consists of a single dealkalizer or dealkalizers that are paralleled (double capacity) to meet system flow demands, reduction ratios, and user criteria.

Each Dealkalizer in a system has an electronic calendar time clock control for regenerating a commercial size dealkalizer. The controller can be set to regenerate daily at a pre-set time of day, or to skip a day or several days, giving the user maximum flexibility. The controller has a lockout feature to prevent regeneration while the Reverse Osmosis Machine is operating.

The resin is a premium grade, strong base anion for high flow rate alkalinity removal made from food-grade materials that meet FDA CFR 173.25 specifications. The Dealkalizer is regenerated with salt brine that is made from premium grade salt pellets made for water softening. Use only high quality salt pellets. Do not use rock salt or solar salt.
